With a background in classical music, Bertrand Bonello became known as a director with Something Organic (French: Quelque chose d'organique, 1998), presented in Berlin, The Pornographer (French: Le pornographe, 2001), invited to the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes and awarded the FIPRESCI prize, Tiresia (2003), in the Official Competition in Cannes. On War (French: De la guerre, 2008) was presented at the Directors' Fortnight. House of Tolerance (French: L'Apollonide, Souvenirs de la maison close, 2011) was in Competition at Cannes and nominated for eight Césars, and Saint Laurent (2014) was in Competition and representing France at the Oscars. Bertrand Bonello then directed Nocturama (2016) and Zombi Child (2019), presented at the Fortnight. Coma was presented at the Berlinale 2022 in the Encounters selection. It was awarded the FIPRESCI prize.
