In 1880, M. Clay, a rich merchant, decides to give life to an old legend: a sailor received five guineas from an old man to spend the night with his young and beautiful wife. M. Clay finds a young women to play the part of his wife and offers her to Paul, a sailor passing through. The night goes as planned but the two young people find love and against what M. Clay had hoped, Paul will never tell his story.
