SYNOPSIS

In town after having left Elvire, whom he took out of a convent to marry, Dom Juan noticed a young woman on the eve of getting married and decides to abduct her while she and her fiancé will be on a day out at sea. His project fails and his boat having capsized, he and his people end up in a farming village, in which he is warned that his brothers in-law, Dom Carlos and Dom Alonse, are after him. He flees through the forest with his valet Sganarelle. By coincidence, he saves Dom Carlos’s life who accept, to differ his vengeance provided that Dom Juan returns to Elvire. On the way back home, the master and the valet walk by the mausoleum of a Commander killed by Dom Juan the year before and he invites the statue for diner that same evening. Back home, he postpones the diner three times after the unannounced visits of his creditor, his father and his wife, now back to the religious life. The Commander’s statue, arrived last and refuses to share its meal but invites him back the next day. The next afternoon, Dom Juan tells his father who is delighted that he has decided to go back to religion, then confides in Sganarelle that this sudden turnaround is a ploy to cover himself of all possible annoyance. As the Commander’s statue appears and discovers his refusal to repent, it grasps his hand and throws him into the bowels of the earth.
