Alice Diop is a French screenwriter and filmmaker born in 1979. After studying history and visual sociology at Panthéon-Sorbonne University, she turned to documentary filmmaking. Several of her short and medium-length features have been selected and lauded at festivals, such as LES SÉNÉGALAISES ET LA SÉNÉGAULOISE (2007), LA MORT DE DANTON (2011), as well as LA PERMANENCE (2016) and VERS LA TENDRESSE (2016), which won the César Best Short Film Award in 2017. Her feature-length documentary NOUS (2022) went on to win the Berlinale Best Documentary Award as well as the Best Film Award in its Encounters Section, in 2021. SAINT OMER is Alice Diop’s first feature-length fiction.
