We live with our childhood. First features look back on them. We find their marks in works to come. Like a print.
Chairing the fifth edition of the Champs-Élysées Film Festival is a commitment. I’m glad to have a jury so brilliantly formed around me. Together, we will watch the last announced American films. Being in competition is hard, but it’s not easy either to be part of a jury. To be fair and also mindful of any swerves, marks of extravagance to which you weren’t familiar with. I don’t watch a film as an actress or a director but as someone who loves cinema… madly, the most beautiful medium for imagination with literature.
We will strive to be up to this honor we’ve been offered.
Wishing you a happy festival,
Nicole GARCIA
After studying philosophy and acting, Nicole GARCIA starts her career on stage. She wins the first acting prize of the Conversatoire, before participating in many plays. Her part in Alain RESNAIS‘s Mon Oncle d’Amérique (1979) gives her a central place in French cinema. In 1985, she directs her first feature, Un Week end sur deux. Her films are centered on a very personal universe, filled with stirring and complex characters, such as the parts played by Gérard LANVIN in Le Fils préféré (1993) or Catherine DENEUVE in Place Vendôme (1997).
With L’Adversaire (2002), starring Daniel AUTEUIL, and Selon Charlie (2005), an ensemble film around seven male characters, Nicole GARCIA confirms her directing skills.
In 2009, she goes back to her Algerian childhood and collaborates with Jean DUJARDIN for Un Balcon sur la mer. Un Beau dimanche, starring Louise BOURGOUIN and Pierre ROCHEFORT, was released in February 2014 in France.
In 2015, she directs Mal de Pierre, which premiered in official selection in Cannes.
