Mildred and Richard Loving want to get married. Everything seems normal, except that he is white and she is black, and they live in the segregated United States in 1958. The state of Virginia, where the Lovings settle after marrying, sues them; the couple faces a jail sentence, which will be suspended if they agree to leave the state. Seeing this as a violation of their civil rights, Richard and Mildred file suit. They will go all the way to the Supreme Court, which invalidates the Virginia law prohibiting interracial marriage in 1967. The Loving v. Virginia judgement affirmed the fact that everyone has the right to love, regardless of racial distinctions.
