SYNOPSIS

In 1902, two Swedish immigrants, Joel and Paul Hillstrom, set foot in the United States. They experience a new language and the extreme poverty of the East Side of New York. Paul leaves the city; Joel, in love with a young Italian woman, stays. But their affair doesn't last. With no ties in New York, Joel, now Joe Hill, sets off for the West to find his brother.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Born in 1930 in Malmö into a working-class family, Bo WIDERBERG begins as a writer, publishing an essay on BERGMAN's cinema, before directing his first film, the marvelous Barnvagnen. One success after another, Elvira Madigan, Adalen 31 and Joe Hill win awards in Cannes. Champion of social conflict, he died on the 1st of May 1996, activist until the end. His work, combining sensuality and commitment, private life and History, is a must-see.
