Abel Gance (1889–1981) went back to the Front to film battle scenes that were included in his film. He started work in August 1918 and some scenes were shot on actual battlefields. The film met international success, largely due to the strength with which Gance depicts suffering during wartime, and in particular with his “Funeral March of the Dead’ sequence, thus making him one of Europe’s greatest directors.
