Jean-Luc Godard was born in 1930 in Paris. As a young man he tried his hand at several jobs (editor, TV cameraman, publicist) but never for long. In 1960 he directed his first film, Breathless, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. On the set of his next film The Little Soldier he met Anna Karina, who would become his wife and muse. He gave her acting roles in films such as A Woman Is a Woman (1961) and Pierrot le Fou. After the events of May 1968 he went on to direct political films before coming back to less topical films in the 1980s.
